Caroline Bergvall @ Paris Est Créteil, June 30, July 1st

For the second session of our 3-year program we are delighted to have Caroline Bergvall with us and wish to thank her for her presence.

This session will be important in that the idea for this programme emerged in part from Caroline Bergvall's 4-week residency at Paris Est Créteil in March 2010.

We will read Meddle English (Nightboat Books, 2010). This book offers a significant number of creative essays.Caroline will be with us on the 30th of June in the afternoon and on the 1st of July in the morning.


International writer and artist. Works across artforms, media and languages. Projects alternate between books,
audio pieces, performances and language installations. Latest book: Meddle English: New and Selected Texts (Nightboat Books, 2011). Currently being translated into French. Latest solo commission: Middling English (John Hansard Gallery). Previous projects at: Hammer Museum (LA), The Serpentine Gallery (London), MOMA (NY), DIA Arts Foundation (NY), Museum of Contemporary Arts (Antwerp), Arnolfini Gallery (Bristol). Forthcoming group shows: Tapiès Foundation (Barcelona), Platforma (Refugee Council/London).

Caroline Bergvall’s work champions notions of language and performativity; bilingualism and textual speech; new literacies; language politics and citizenry, audiovisual inscription. Director of of the influential programme Performance Writing, Dartington College of Arts for the first years of its existence (1995-2000); co-Chair MFA in Writing, Bard College (NY, 2004-2006). Awarded the prestigious AHRC Fellowshp in the Creative and Performing Arts, Southampton University (2007-2010). www.carolinebergvall.com


Thursday June 30:
- Morning: 10 to 12:30 : we'll be discussing Caroline Bergvall's work so as to prepare the afternoon session
- Afternoon: 14:30 : we'll be speaking about Caroline Bergvall's project in Meddle English and its critical dimension

Friday July 1rst: 10am-1pm: discussing practice-based criticism with Caroline Bergvall.
Location: salle des thèses (see map below).
